The Need to Succeed
Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.
Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:2-9).
God guarantees to fulfill only his purpose for your life. We don’t create our purpose; we discover and pursue it. Joshua knew he had nailed it; he had the presence of God, he obeyed the principles of God, and he was filled with the purpose of God. Success was guaranteed.
Just look at the way God brought Joshua from an unlikely success to an irresistible success. He didn’t do it in a human way, picking and choosing what works based on studies and surveys. He did it God’s way.
Listen again to what God said to Joshua in verse 5: “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.”
Did you hear what God said to him? God said, “If you will recognize my presence, obey my will, and fulfill the purpose I have put you on this planet to fulfill, no one will stand against you. You will be an irresistible force, an immovable object. Every foe you meet will be the foe you beat.” Nothing and no one can stand against anyone who stands with God.
The Bible is not about your personal fulfillment, accomplishments, or happiness. The Bible is about God’s presence with you, how you fit into his plan, and how you can be fulfilled through his purposes, not your own. God will feed your need for success with the only success that matters—his.
We were put on this earth to experience the presence of God, obey the principles of God, and fulfill the purpose of God. When we do, success is guaranteed.
Each of us has the promise of God’s presence as we, by faith, claim the “land” that is ours. Yes, we each have a calling and a place in the work of God. As we move into that sacred place—that promised land—we can know that no matter what adversity comes against us, no man (or messenger from Satan) will be able to stand before us. As God was with Moses, so he promised to be with Joshua—and through faith, with us also. He will never leave us nor forsake us. This is his promise—and it’s by this promise that we’re able to dwell successfully in our calling.
