In the creation account is says man became a "soul" .... that is a person ... (not some spirit of some kind) ... man was given the breath of life .... that breath (from God) animated his body that the Lord formed from the dust of the earth ... he (man) became alive .... nothing beyond that.
Genesis 2:7
New International Version Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
New Living Translation Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.
English Standard Version then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Berean Standard Bible Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
King James Bible And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
His Word says we are not immortal ... only God is immortal .... we received immortality (everlasting life) when Jesus returns ... not before.
1 Timothy 6:16
New International Version (He/God) who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
New Living Translation He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.
English Standard Version (He/God) who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
Berean Standard Bible He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.
Berean Literal Bible (He/God) alone having immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no one of men has seen nor is able to see, to whom be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
We are mortal ... we do not have a "immortal soul" .... we receive the gift of immortality when Jesus returns ... not before.
1 Corinthians 15:53-55 King James Version 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
Mortal means subject to death .... and yes we ARE subject to death ... until Jesus returns.

eleosFirst, a human being is a triune being, created in the likeness of a triune God. God is revealed as Father, Son and Spirit—three Persons, one God. Man is revealed as spirit, soul and body—three elements, but one personality. Second, man’s rebellion against God caused dislocation and malfunction of every area of his personality. Third, through the miracle of regeneration, God has made provision for man’s restoration in every area of his being. God has a plan for each area of the restored human personality— for the spirit, for the soul and for the body. If you accept Jesus as your lord and savior then the function of the regenerated body is to be the temple of God, the dwelling place of God, the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit takes residence in the temple, we are obligated to present our members to the Lord as slaves, or instruments, of God’s purposes. As the body is yielded to the Holy Spirit, it becomes sanctified, or holy—set apart to God. We become a Living Sacrifice.

The only Hebrew word traditionally translated "soul" (nephesh) in English-language Bibles refers to a living, breathing conscious body, rather than to an immortal soul (spirit) of some kind ... we have the breath of life. A soul/spirit is not something we possess ... it is what we are a living being/person. 1 Corinthians 15:45; Genesis 2:7 Yes, we will indeed be restored someday and become a complete person again. Amen!
I am addressing the "immortality" belief ... some believe our "spirit/soul" goes somewhere (either heaven or a burning hell) ... no ... all rest peacefully (non thinking) in the grave until the Lord returns and the 1st resurrection happens 1 Corinthians 15:51-54. We have 3 elements that make up our existence and none exist separately.
The soul isn’t something that exists independently of the body. Instead, when the Bible talks about the soul, it is talking about the complete being—the living individual.
There’s 1 Timothy 6:14-16, where we learn that God alone possesses immortality. As things currently stand, we humans are mortal. We die and cease to exist. Simple as that.

IMO ...... and don't quote me on this, a soul is so post to be an iimprovement. Some times it does not work that way though. To many beatings ...... and not being.

On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve [c]kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; 4 they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. 5 And there will no longer be any night; and they [d]will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will reign forever and ever.

The soul is not a conscience thinking "spirit" that returns to God .... it is the breath of life .... without the breath of life we cease to exist ..... when we are resurrected God will return our breath to us and we will live again .... the "soul" is a complete person .... a "soul" is not something we possess it is what we are ... a living being .... is a soul. “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 5:8 "Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life." – 2 Corinthians 5:2-4
The reason we have this hope is that we know that the moment we pass from this life there is a heavenly dwelling waiting for us.
