For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. John 3:16
Unconditional love is known as affection without any limitations, or love without conditions. This term is sometimes associated with other terms such as true altruism or complete love. Each area of expertise has a certain way of describing unconditional love, but most will agree that it is that type of love which has no bounds and is unchanging.
In Christianity, unconditional love is thought to be part of the Four Loves; affection, friendship, eros, and charity.
In ethology, or the study of animal behavior, unconditional love would refer to altruism, which in turn refers to the behavior by individuals that increases the fitness of another while decreasing the fitness of the individual committing the act. In psychology, unconditional love refers to a state of mind in which one has the goal of increasing the welfare of another, despite the lack of any evidence of benefit for oneself.
A relationship with God is similar to marriage. Imagine a relationship where you were chosen and with someone that you chose. Marriage was created by God to unite a man and woman for life. In Judaism, marriage is a covenant between two people: a solemn, binding agreement. In a marriage covenant, a man and woman promise to devote themselves to only each other, and they pledge to be faithful and loyal to one another. Note how this is a two-way street.
Obviously, when you marry someone, you expect them to spend time with you, love you, and be devoted to you. It wouldn’t be okay if they devoted too much time and attention to others. You don’t want to compete with other people because you’re in covenant with that person.
I think it's the same way in the Bible, God often described His relationship with His people as a marriage. He was the husband and His people were His bride. God expected His people to be devoted to Him alone; having other gods was not ok with Him, and in His eyes, it was like adultery.
More than anything, God wanted a people to call His own. Just before God delivered His people from Egypt, He said, “I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.”
God freed His people from being slaves to another nation, so He expected some devotion from them. I don't think he wants us to be slaves but to choose him freely. Just like the bride and the groom choose each other.
