Angels can show themselves in our dreams. Jacob saw angels that way at two crucial times in his life. He saw them first on a stairway to heaven when he was alone and camping out while running away from home Genesis 28:1–22. Many years later they appeared in a dream in which God told him it was time to go back Genesis 31:10–13.
The New Testament story of Joseph the husband of Mary contains the most dream appearances by angels in the Scriptures. It also contains some of the strongest examples of obedience. Joseph didn’t get into angelmania from all of his supernatural experiences. He just did what God’s angel told him to do.
While we study his story, let’s ask ourselves these questions: How is my own track record in obedience? Is it strong enough that God could trust me to obey his special instructions delivered through an angel in a dream?
Notice what thorough and specific directions Joseph receives on the first night an angel comes to him.
An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:20–21
Joseph gets the what and the how and the why. Now see for yourself how thorough Joseph is in his response.
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. Matthew 1:24–25
Joseph has proven himself. God has his man, and he can use the same, intimate channel again to communicate to him. Look closely at the next directions Joseph obtains by night courier, this time after the wise men had left Bethlehem:
An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” Matthew 2:13
Again, judge his response, and notice how Joseph fulfills prophetic Scripture by simply obeying God.
