Or, is this assurance only something we can have about ourselves. I should have asked these in the started thread. Is assurance a gift or is it something every believer can have? It seem it is a gift not everyone possesses?

Can a Christian have assurance he is saved and will go to heaven? Can a mother or father have assurance that their child or children are saved and will go to heaven? The answer to the first question is yes, If you practice obedience. Obedience is an important avenue for assurance of salvation. If you want to know day by day that you know Him, that you are saved, it is simple: Just look at what Jesus has done for us and keep His commands. "And this is how we may discern [daily, by experience] that we are coming to know Him [to perceive, recognize, understand, and become better acquainted with Him]: if we keep (bear in mind, observe, practice) His teachings (precepts, commandments).
4 Whoever says, I know Him but fails to keep and obey His commandments (teachings) is a liar, and the Truth [of the Gospel] is not in him." 1 John 2:1–2
I'm not talking about any form of works salvation. More along the lines of lordship salvation. Many people get to too confused.
But Back to obedience. The word “keeping” conveys the idea of guarding. We should guard God’s commands as a precious treasure. And as we do, the treasure of our assurance of salvation is strengthened with it. Obedience is an important avenue of assurance. Because I know Him in all of His beauty, glory, and majesty, I delight in obeying Him. To obey Christ is not a burden. It is a blessing. It is my natural response to what He has done for me.
However, if we claim to know Him but do not guard His commands as precious (1 John 2:4), we are liars (In what we say) and the truth is not in us (who we are). We are spiritual deceivers, fakes. We claim to have something we really don’t: a true and genuine relationship with God.
The new life that results from abiding in Jesus our advocate and our atonement will place a new knowledge in our minds and a new desire and passion in our hearts to obey Him. That desire to obey and our decision to obey gives us a certainty that we know Him.
Abide, Abide, Abide and Obey, Obey, Obey Then you'll have all the assurance you'll Ever Need.
As far as our offspring, The Bible tells us to train them up in the way they should go and when they get older they won't depart from it. We do that and pray for them, that they come to Jesus as their Lord and Savior. But it has to be their decision. All we can do is plan to seed and pray someone waters it and that God gives the increase.

Or, is this assurance only something we can have about ourselves. I should have asked these in the started thread. Is assurance a gift or is it something every believer can have? It seem it is a gift not everyone possesses? Let's start with the gift. The gift of God is our Salvation in Jesus Christ. That's eternal life. That's what Jesus did for us. And I don't think any of us are powerful enough to undo what Jesus did. And that gift that we've been given knowing my heavenly father and his attributes It doesn't seem likely that he would give me a gift when I was yet a sinner and then take it back if I didn't act right. To me assurance is a fact. Trust me if there is any way possible to lose your salvation I would have lost my years and years ago. I think people that believe you can lose your salvation just don't realize how saved they are. It's eternal life, if it stopped at some point because of some sort of behavior on our part it wouldn't be eternal. I had a good friend that was a Mormon as a matter of fact we just did his memorial service Friday. I don't know how much you know about Mormons but they never have assurance of salvation they always have to do one work after another work. So my friend always had a tough time with assurance of salvation he just wasn't sure God loved him. I had many a talk with him and it seems to come from low self-esteem and he also suffered from clinical depression. Clinical depression is only partly a chemical unbalanced It's more of a emotional unbalance, What you think about yourself. What I'm saying is you have to know how much God loves you and that no one's going to snatch you out of his hand that he'll leave the 99 sheep and go look for that one lost lam. Think about the parable of the Prodigal Son. His Dad let him leave But when he came to his senses and came home he ran out to welcome him back.

Can a Christian have assurance he is saved and will go to heaven? Can a mother or father have assurance that their child or children are saved and will go to heaven? Yes we can know that we have eternal life. In Johns writing we read the following regarding Jesus. He was in the beginning with God(John 1:1,1 John 1:1-4) We also read that in Him was life, the very source of life (John 1:4)whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life(3:16) He who believes in the Son has eternal life(3:36) He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day(6:54)This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent(17:3)These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life(1 John 5:13). Jesus is in fact Eternal Life. He who has the Son has the life and he who does not have the Son does not have the life. He is the true God and Eternal Life(1 John 1:1-4,5:20). Eternal life is not just unending life. It is the life we now have in God through Jesus. John refers to Jesus Christ Himself as eternal life. It is life that comes from God. A person who has eternal life has God’s life within him. It is obvious that eternal life doesn’t begin when we die. Jesus said, He who believes in Me has (present tense) everlasting life. He didn’t say that the one who believes in Him will have (future tense) everlasting life. He said that he has eternal life in the here and now from that very first moment of faith. Eternal life is unending life. Jesus, Paul and John emphasize that eternal life is a present reality and the present possession of the Christian in the here and now. It will have its ultimate fulfillment in the future but every believer has eternal life at the moment they believe in the Son of God. Jesus said I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:28).That means nothing or no one can remove a believer from Christ. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:30 that believers are sealed for the day of redemption. If believers did not have salvation or eternal life/security then the sealing could not truly be until the day of redemption. Paul in Romans 8:38-39 really drives home the everlasting promise of eternal life/salvation for the believer "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Our eternal security is bought with the blood of Christ, promised to us by the Father Who cannot deny Himself and sealed in the believers heart by the Holy Spirit. What wonderful promises believers have for their eternal security in Christ. Jesus tells us in John 3:15-16 that whoever believes in Jesus Christ will have eternal life, not might have but actually possesses that everlasting life. If a person is promised eternal life and then to have it taken away then it was never eternal to begin with and it makes Jesus out to be a liar and the promises of God to be false. Below we see more promises the believer can count on for eternal life now and in the future. We can be confident in the promises of God. John 3:16 16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. John 6:47 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. John 6:54 54 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. John 10:27-30 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 "I and the Father are one." Matt 25:46 "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." 1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, 1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
hope this helps !!!

Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God. —1 Corinthians 6:9–11
People guilty of all manner of sexual and unethical sins had found forgiveness through Christ. And the author himself was guilty of persecuting the church and dragging Christians off to prison. Hell is not reserved for those who commit certain types of sin. Otherwise, Paul could not have said what he did to the believers in Corinth. If there are sins so severe that they determine a man’s fate, certainly the murder of the Son of God would be one. What greater crime could be committed in the whole of human history? Yet, in the gospel of Luke we read that Jesus looked down on the very people who were crucifying Him and said,
Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.—Luke 23:34
As strange as it may sound, killing the Son of God was not severe enough to put those men outside the boundaries of God’s offer of forgiveness.
What about a man who keeps repeating the same sin over and over again? Surely God grows weary; eventually even His patience must run out. Even if he repents after each offense, soon it becomes apparent that the man’s repentance is insincere.” Is this the type of person destined for hell?
Again, the answer is no. Jesus dealt specifically with this issue in a dialogue with the disciples. He said,
Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, “I repent,” forgive him.—Luke 17:3–4
Jesus went to an unreal extreme to make a simple, yet difficult to accept, point. The Son of God taught that if someone sins against us seven times a day, we are to forgive him. His point was not that we are to limit ourselves to seven times, but that we are to continually forgive others regardless of how often they offend us or how insincere their apology may be.
If a man or a woman ends up in hell, who has at some point in life put his or her trust in Christ, doesn’t that make what Jesus said to Nicodemus a lie? Or at best only half true?

For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. —John 3:16–17
What keeps a man from perishing? Jesus did not cite for Nicodemus a list of sins and then add, “As long as a man keeps himself from these, he will not perish.” His only condition was belief in Him. Notice His next words: He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. —John 3:18Look at that verse and answer this question: According to Jesus, what must a person do to keep from being judged for sin? Must he stop doing something? Must he promise to stop doing something? Must he have never done something? The answer is so simple that many stumble all over it without ever seeing it. All Jesus requires is that the individual “believe in” Him. Look again. What is true of someone who has already been judged? Did he commit an unpardonable sin of some sort? No! He is judged because he has “not believed in” the Son of God. Charles F. Stanley, Eternal Security: Can You Be Sure?

The positive aspects of the doctrine of perseverance should be strongly stressed. Firstly, salvation is unconditionally received and unconditionally kept. It is a true gift. Secondly, the doctrine of Perseverance places a strong emphasis on the power, and grace of God. He is in charge in His creation. “No one can restrain His hand or say to Him ‘What have You done?’ ” (Dan. 4:35) He is a God of great grace. Why else would He seek to redeem men who had sealed their fate like the fallen angels? Grace is the only answer. Grace is more than a warm feeling in His heart; it is a powerful agent for working His good will for those who do not deserve it. Thirdly, perseverance affirms that the sacrifice of Christ is enough to pay for all sin: past, present and future. A legal transaction of eternal consequence took place on the cross, where Jesus took upon Himself the condemnation sinners deserve in order to impute His own righteousness to them. His death sufficed for the payment demanded by God’s holy justice. As Paul says: He has made you alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Col. 2:13, 14.

A person who rationalizes sin... berean-apologetics.boards.net/post/6631A person "rationalizes" sin when he devises superficially rational excuses for his wicked attitudes or beliefs. We live in a nation where people rationalize everything they do. Few ever admit wrongdoing; everybody has an excuse; nobody is wrong. Of false prophets Jesus said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Mt. 7:16).

Assurance of salvation results from the inner witness of the Holy Spirit which produces a subjective inner confidence. Consequently, assurance is not dependent on a confidence that one cannot apostatize in the future. This may be the place to make a passing observation about those who profess “eternal security”—who insist so strongly that they would have no assurance apart from believing that they can never again be lost. I submit that this is a misplaced assurance, an expression of confidence in a doctrine like Calvinism. For the majority of Christians, assurance is an expression of confidence in Jesus.
