God's character is what shapes the Christian life. Our growth depends partly upon the soul’s convictions as to the character of God. This life is derived from God, and is developed in the soul. There are inscrutable influences of the Holy Spirit in bringing about the inward change. There are also undefinable influences of godly friends or preachers, but none of these can be effectual unless there be a truth or fact through which the Holy Spirit works.
Paul was one of the most spiritual and self–denying of men, and again and again he traces his inner life to the power which Christian truth had over him—over his heart, of course, but over his intellect and emotions as well. God is—that is a doctrine. God loves you—that is a doctrine, and so on. Feed your mind on these and kindred facts, and yours shall be no puny life.
Paul tells us that a lack of the knowledge of God is shameful.
Awake [from your drunken stupor and return] to sober sense and your right minds, and sin no more. For some of you have not the knowledge of God [you are utterly and willfully and disgracefully ignorant, and continue to be so, lacking the sense of God’s presence and all true knowledge of Him]. I say this to your shame. 1 Corinthians 15:34
It is seen as the root of the moral problems of the human race.
HEAR THE word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy (a pleading contention) with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no faithfulness, love, pity and mercy, or knowledge of God [from personal experience with Him] in the land.
2 There is nothing but [false] swearing and breaking faith and killing and stealing and committing adultery; they break out [into violence], one [deed of] bloodshed following close on another. Hosea 4:1–2
The Bible says the basic problem and cause of man’s rebellion is an absence of the fear of God, and an appropriate fear of God can be achieved only by having a knowledge of God.
There is no [reverential] fear of God before their eyes. Romans 3:18
Note how the fear of God and the knowledge of God are linked as parallel terms in Proverbs 2:5: “Then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.”
So by knowing the character of God we are able to properly respect and honor our Creator.

Maybe we could come up with a list of Gods innate character traits. Who is God apart from His creation ? Theology is the study of God so then it stands to reason who is God and what are Gods revealed character traits apart from a fallen world. Who is God and what does God reveal about Himself within His own nature ? This very question and search is what led me out of Calvinism. When I challenged the Calvinists on the old forum to debate this on the Trinity forum none of them, not a single one was willing to stay on topic and could not discuss who God is apart from His creation, what are His innate attributes. And the reality of this very topic proves that their theology is flawed since inevitably they always run to Gods character after the fall when sin entered the world. They would always bait n switch gears with wrath, justice, vengeance, anger, punishment etc...... Those are all in relation to the fall and have to do with man and not Gods innate qualities within the Tri-Unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. See here on the Aseity of God when challenged. Notice all the ad hominem replies. forums.carm.org/threads/the-attributes-of-the-trinity.8527/hope this helps !!!

Independence: God is self-existent; indeed, his very nature is to exist. Independence is the opposite of dependence or contingency, which is true of all created things. God is not dependent, and he cannot be dependent on anything or anyone else. Immutability: God is unchanging, the same yesterday, today, and forever. God is immutable in his (1) triune nature; (2) attributes, as presented in this section; (3) plan, that is, his purpose for all creation that he is bringing to pass; and (4) promises, all that he pledges to be and do for his people. Eternity: God always exists, not being bound by time. He has no beginning; God has always existed. He has no end; God will always exist. And God does not develop presently in terms of time-sequence. Indeed, God existed before time, which he created when he made the universe. Spirituality/Invisibility: God is an invisible, spiritual being, not composed of any material element. Because of God’s spiritual nature, no one has ever seen, or can see, God. Omnipresence: God is present everywhere, not being bound by space. Furthermore, it is not as though part of God is present in one place and another part in another place. Rather, God is present everywhere with his whole being at the same time. Omnipotence: God is all-powerful. He is able to do everything that is fitting for him as God to do. This means (thankfully) there are some things—for example, breaking his promises, ceasing to be God, sinning, lying—that God cannot do. Omniscience: God is all-knowing. He fully knows himself, the past, the present, the future, the decisions and actions of his creatures, all actual things, and all possible things. God does not grow in knowledge by learning new things. Wisdom: God always wills the highest purposes and the proper means to achieve those purposes for his own glory and his people’s blessing. Divine wisdom is clearly seen in creation, salvation, and the church. Truthfulness and Faithfulness: God always tells the truth and always fulfills his promises. Indeed, he cannot lie and cannot be unfaithful to his word. Love: God always gives of himself. Love eternally characterizes the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. From this trinitarian love flows the creation of the world, which God continues to love even when it is hostile toward him. Indeed, God’s love is demonstrated in the sending of his Son to die for sinful people. Goodness/Grace/Mercy/Patience: God is kind and benevolent. He is good in and of himself, and all his ways in creation, providence, and salvation are good. In grace, God expresses his goodness to people who deserve condemnation. In mercy, God expresses his goodness to people who are distressed. In patience, God expresses his goodness by withholding punishment. Holiness: God is both exalted above creation and absolutely morally pure. Because of his transcendent holiness, God is completely separated from his creation. Because of his moral holiness, God is completely pure and uncorrupted by sin. Righteousness/Justice: God is upright in himself and in his ways. God himself is absolutely righteous and acts in ways that are perfect. He is just in establishing moral standards, requiring conformity to them, and judging people’s obedience and disobedience. Jealousy: God is protective of his honor. Because he alone is God, only he is worthy of ultimate allegiance. Thus, when people, who were created to honor God, honor something or someone else, God is provoked to jealousy. (Deuteronomy 6:15) Wrath: God intensely hates sin and is ready to punish it fully. Because he is holy, God cannot approve anything that is not perfectly holy. Because he is righteous, God metes out punishment against anything that violates his right standards. Glory: God is infinitely beautiful because of who he is. This beauty is displayed as God manifests himself in creation, redemption, and consummation. Glory is also the magnificent splendor that shines from the revelation of God and his ways. Though these divine attributes may be named and defined in different ways, Catholics and Protestants acknowledge them as the characteristics of God. — This article is by Gregg Allison and Chris Castaldo, adapted from their new book The Unfinished Reformation: What Unites and Divides Catholics and Protestants After 500 Years.

I like the short list, the Bible says that God “is” three things: God is light, God is spirit, and God is love. First John 4:8 doesn’t say, “God is loving.” It says, “God is love”—and there is a difference. We might say that a person we know is a “loving” person, and we would understand what that means. But God is not “loving”—He is love. That means the very essence of His nature is love; everything He does is a manifestation of love; and He cannot do anything that is not-love.
Everything good the human race knows how to do, it learned from God, and that is especially true of love. God set the example for how to love by loving us “in spite of.” The clearest sign of God-like love is when someone loves another in spite of what they have done wrong, which is how God loves us.
We are Studying the dangers of unforgiveness in our life group this week.

Motives.....
defined.....a reason for doing something, especially one that is hidden or not obvious
We all have motives. A quality of existence not absent in Divinity.....
When the "Character" of God is the topic of discussion, I believe we must deal with the difficult task of trying to discern the "Motives" that drive the direct and Divine actions of God. Motives DEFINE.... Character. Why we do the "things" we do......
One of the primary "motivators" that distinguishes the PURITY of Divinity is "Love"........
I could say many things about "Love" within the context of Divinity but I would like to focus upon a singular aspect of God's Love that is often ignored. Ignore this "quality" of Divinity "hides" the shining character of God from our fellowmen....
1Co 13:5 "seeks not her own".........
I will add more later....... Thanks

Thanks That's excellent, a very thought-provoking topic. Maybe God’s motivation is love, but love for whom? The chosen? The good, clean, shiny people? Nope. Jesus tells us that God’s love encompasses the world. That’s everyone. That’s chosen people and not-chosen people. That’s devout careful followers of the law, and flagrant willful sinners. That’s people like me, and people not like me. The short answer to the question “why did God create us?” is “for His pleasure.” Revelation 4:11 says, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” Colossians 1:16 reiterates the point: “All things were created by him and for him.” Being created for God’s pleasure does not mean humanity was made to entertain God or provide Him with amusement. God is a creative Being, and it gives Him pleasure to create. God is a personal Being, and it gives Him pleasure to have other beings He can have a genuine relationship with. got?

God is basic to life, and no matter what else may change, he will not. This fundamental fact about God gives us the “faith of our fathers.” God is love—the highest height, the deepest depth, the broadest breadth, the very essence and wellspring of love. God cannot change.
Because he loved and wanted a being like himself upon whom he could bestow his love, he created man in his own image. Man is God’s offspring, the crown of his creative genius. Because we are his creation God loves, us, and no matter how far astray we go, he will love us so long as we live.

Because we are his creation God loves, us, and no matter how far astray we go, he will love us so long as we live. And we know that love is who God is apart from His creation. Love by definition takes another to be shared which is why a unitarian God cannot be love for to be alone means love must be experienced outside of a unitarian god. So a unitarian god would be reliant upon its creation to know and experience love. But sine we know the Biblical God is Triune- Father, Son and Holy Spirit love is not only shared but experienced with Gods own nature, character which is why Scripture declares that God is love. So when we begin with God ( Theology ) and start from there and work our way from His innate attributes ( Gods Aseity ) we can begin with Love for it is the primary attribute/character from which all others flow. Just like with the fruit of the spirit is love from which all the others flow from. The same when we read 1 Cor 13- all the descriptions flow from love. As @praisyeshua had alluded to with God its our starting point. And its why in the final analysis I had to reject Calvinism for its an assault on the very nature and character of God as being love.

I stopped being a Pink fan As soon as I found out how much Calvinists are into him. Remember old Sovereign Grace? Big Pink fan. Sounds like a rock group. Big Pink. Wouldn't you know it is.
